Watch Live: Cambodia Hosts Press Conference on Ceasefire Talks in Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute
The governments of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand issued a joint statement following a special meeting hosted by Malaysia to address the ongoing border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. The meeting, chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was attended by Cambodia’s Prime Minister Samdech Moha Boroev Thipadei Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. The United States and China also participated actively to support regional peace efforts.
In the joint statement, the participating leaders emphasized their commitment to de-escalation, peace, and regional stability. Prime Minister Hun Manet and Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai both expressed their willingness to implement measures that promote peace and stability along the border.
The key outcomes of the meeting include:
An immediate and unconditional ceasefire, effective from 24:00 hours on July 28, 2025. This step is deemed crucial for reducing violence and restoring order.
An informal meeting of regional military commanders—specifically Military Regions 1 and 2 of Thailand and Military Regions 4 and 5 of Cambodia—will convene at 07:00 hours on July 29, 2025. Further meetings involving military attachments and regional commanders, led by the ASEAN Chair, will follow if both sides agree.
A meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) is scheduled to be hosted by Cambodia on August 4, 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to resolve border issues.
The statement highlighted Malaysia’s role in coordinating the peace process, noting that Malaysia would deploy an observer team to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire. The leaders reaffirmed their support for continued dialogue and encouraged direct communication between their respective Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers, and Defense Ministers to sustain peace efforts.
